Cost Comparison - .27 cents (Pampers) v. .40 cents (g Diapers)
We used Pampers Swaddlers previously. Freddie is current in a size 2-3, and each diaper costs .27 cents. (64 diapers for $17.49 at Target) As the child's diaper size increase, the number of diapers in the package decrease, so when he's as big as Sammy (size 6) diapers run about .32 cents each.
In g Diapers each flushable from now until he's out of diapers will cost .40 cents a diaper. (32 packs of diapers available at Whole Foods for 12.99. I've heard you can order them by the case from Whole Foods for a 10 percent discount.)
Convenience
They are both easy, it’s just that I was so used to the disposable, and there is a bit of a learning curve. But. I feel like once I hit my stride it will all even out.
I wanted to do cloth but never did because of all the cost up front and all the washing. The washing was the biggie - I just know I wouldn’t do the poop right and things would get very unhygienic at my house.
There is a little bit of laundry with the g’s - throwing the little g pants into the laundry with the baby clothes, and washing the lliner either in the machine or sink, but so far it seems minor. (I’ll have to update post-solid foods poop.)
Day 1
Overnight worked fine. A little leak, but he’d been in the diaper for almost 12 hours, which is exaclty how I push a disposable and we’ve had leaks with those, so no biggie.
Freddie decided to poop three times on our first day in the g. I didn’t have enough experience with them for this kind of elimination. I clogged our toilet trying to flush the third diaper by not getting all the filler out of the liner. It may still be plugged, I don’t know. I’ve beenusing the upstairs bathroom since yesterday - !
I washed all theliners and both of his little g pants that day out of necessity, but it was good to learn the process and see how easy/difficult that was going to be. During the washing I realized that one of the pants from our starter kit was a Large, which no doubt contributed to the leaking I was experiencing. (He’s a Medium)
Day 2
A little more leaking due to improper installation on child. I didn’t g it overnight because the Medium one suffered a late-day leak and I couldn’t get it washed in time. I also didn’t flush any becuase of the aforementioned toilet fiasco. (Jacob spent about an hour trying to plunge, and was very vocal about his displeasure... I called the g Customer Serice and Kim herself called me back and offered a tip for breaking up the diaper in the pipe. Again, I don’t know if worked because I’ve been avoiding that toilet.)
Day 3 (today)
First thing we had a poopsplosion and it did go up the back and out of the diaper. Would have happened in a disposable, too, the only difference is that I don’t have a ruined onsie becuase the liner and the little g pant took most of the hit. I rinsed them out and sprayed with Shout, and hopefully the tiny bit that got on the little g pant won’t be there after a spin in the washer. I’m reallly hoping that my friend Gina will be able to give me a diapering tutorial so that I’ll have the “seal” of the liner perfected and avoid future blow-outs. (As much as that is possible.) I think it’s just challenging achieving the perfect seal on a squirmy-wormy 12-week-old with lots and lots of folds.
More updates to come, I’m sure....
